Trauma and Psychosis

This is a cogent slideshow by Ron Unger that explains the continuum of PTSD and psychosis, how they are alike and how they differ. A clear and accessible set of slides that challenges the reductionist biological explanation of extreme states of mind.

About Madam Nomad

I survived 16 years of rape and battery in my family's house and when I ran away from home I was incarcerated in a psychiatric hospital. I was labeled and drugged with benzos and barbiturates. I ran away from there, worked as a private duty aide, had two kids, and then sued my parent for incest in 1985. In the same year Dr John Matthew of the Plainfield Health Center convinced me to take drugs for depression. I lost my mind, my soul, my heart and my health. I began the drug taper in 2007 and was able to completely stop the drugs in December, 2011.

I dream of living in VT and also having a small farm. My dream is to have a Residential healing farm for people who want to recover from psychiatry and madness.

There is a place here in VT called Alyssum It’s run and staffed by peers, funded by the dept of Mental Health.

      • Michelle says:

Nice. I looked at the website for Alyssum. I wish we lived in VT right now. I guess, more than that, I wish NC had a place like this. My family truly needs a respite center and of course, we need a place for ongoing recovery services, such as Peer-Respite, for the long term. As it is, ACT (Assertive Community Treatment) is the best and only thing going on NC. I’m sure you know how they work and/or the foundation they work from; evidence based research, which I no longer have faith in because it is funded by the pharmaceutical industry and commitment is as common place to ACT teams as walking my dog is to me.

Here’s a link to Mindfreedom International, which contains information about peer alternatives, how to find them, how to start them. Good luck!
